Below, you’ll be able to learn more about the many great benefits of merino wool:

  • Anti-bacterial and naturally odour resistant
  • 100% renewable, responsible and biodegradable
  • Multi-purpose and moisture management
  • Natural heating and cooling
  • Wicking wonders and quick drying
  • Mulesing-free and fabric that is certified by OEKO-TEX®

Anti-Bacterial and Naturally Odour Resistant

Merino wool has a permanent natural resistance to microbial growth and odour retention.

Garments may be worn for several days without smelling. The reason is a combination of the merino wool’s excellent ability to quickly absorb our sweat and evaporate it, and the fibres’ uneven and negatively-charged surface, which the odour-causing bacteria cannot stand. Because of wool’s ability to effectively manage moisture, odour-causing bacteria don’t have the moist environment they need to thrive.

You can wear wool during intense activity and over extended periods of time without having to worry about odour. The clothes will remain fresh for a much longer time.

100% Renewable, Responsible, and Biodegradable

Wool fibres are the most natural and renewable on the planet, and in our environmentally conscious times, its sustainability and biodegradability are highly marketable properties. It disappears after about 12 months in the ground and will regrow and replace itself. This mean that when wool is disposed it will naturally decompose. Wool is composed of the natural protein keratin (the same protein that makes up human hair) and will not pose as an environmental hazard.

Merino wool has numerous natural fibres attributes that make it one of the most comfortable fabrics to wear and to your skin. It is not only soft against the skin but also gentle to our planet.

Multi-Purpose & Moisture Management

Merino wool is a four seasons material and great for every activity. It breathes and manages moisture better than any other fibre.

Merino fibre is nature’s own miracle, making it possible to produce garments that can absorb and release moisture to cool down or heat up your body as needed. You warm up quickly, but because of the exceptional breathability of merino wool fabrics, you will not overheat. These qualities make pure merino wool garments ideal for most activities – in all kinds of weather, throughout every season. The particular property makes it widely using as underwear, base layer, sportswear, work wear, athletic wear and outdoor wear. In every field - running, cycling, hiking, climbing, skiing, hunting, sailing - there is merino wool.

Natural Heating & Cooling

Wool often has the stereotype of only being good in the cold. You can credit all the wooly sweaters and scarves you wear in winter, but wool truly is a four season fibre.

Think of a sheep. When they get a bit chilly, they don’t head to the closet and grab another layer. When they get warm they don’t throw on a cotton t-shirt. They only get one shot at it and Mother Nature has given them the perfect clothing to keep them comfortable year round in all kinds of conditions.

Warming

Wool has a natural crimp to it that helps it trap more dead air than any other fibre. Dead air is a fantastic insulator and provides a great buffer against the cold. Plus, wool fibres do such a good job of moving moisture away from the skin that even if the fabric is soaking wet the surface area of your skin will remain dry. Merino fibres and fabrics can absorb up to 30% of their dry weight before feeling wet. Most synthetics feel wet after they absorb less than 7%.

Cooling

Wool has the ability to store moisture within the structure of the fibre. As your body warms up, the moisture stored within the fibre will begin to evaporate, cooling the air between your skin and the fabric. The warmer you get the more evaporation takes place and the larger the cooling effect.

Wicking Wonders & Quick Drying

You know how wool moves moisture vapour before it turns to sweat. But, what happens when we perspire faster than the vapour can be transported? At this point, wool will move liquid mechanically, just like synthetics do. Both synthetics and wool have the ability to wick, but only wool has the ability to wick away moisture in its vapour state.

The drying time of a fabric is controlled by two factors:

  1. The amount of liquid moisture held between the fibre matrix when it starts to dry.
  2. The humidity and temperature of the surrounding atmosphere.

Generally, the thicker the fabric, the more moisture it’s able to retain and the longer it takes to dry.

Mulesing-free and certified fabric by OEKO-TEX®

We highly care about choosing the right standards and certifications; and we are proud to guarantee that our merino wool is mulesing-free and the fabric is certified by OEKO-TEX®.

Mulesing is a painful surgical procedure for sheep. It is a method used by some sheep farmers preventing their sheep from being killed by infections caused by insects. Mulesing procedure means cutting skin from around a lamb’s breech to create an area of bare, stretched skin. Because the scarred skin has no folds or wrinkles to hold moisture and feces, it is less likely to attract blowflies who might cause the death of the sheep. Luckily, there are other ways to keep sheep safe from these insects by choosing standards and certifications that ensure a fair treatment of animals.

OEKO-TEX® is one of the world's best-known labels for textiles tested for harmful substances. This label provides the end consumer with a reliable, third-party, independent product label for non-hazardous products that are tested in accordance with the OEKO-TEX® criteria catalogue and thereby contribute to effective consumer protection. The fabrics used in our merino items comply with these standards.

To sum it up, merino wool is purely a natural fibre grown all year around by merino sheep, consuming a healthy cocktail of natural ingredients including sunshine, water, fresh air and grass.
